What employers and travellers should know
In 2024 and 2025, border controls across Europe have become more visible and more rigorous. Switzerland, despite being part of the Schengen area, is not immune to this trend. While the legal framework has not fundamentally changed, day-to-day practice has clearly tightened.
What is happening?
Swiss authorities are carrying out more frequent and more detailed checks, particularly at airports and key land borders. These checks increasingly focus on:
-
travel documents,
-
purpose of stay,
-
and compliance with authorised length of stay.
At the same time, stricter controls by neighbouring countries (notably Germany, France and Italy) directly affect travel to and from Switzerland, leading to longer checks and increased scrutiny.
The role of technology
New Schengen systems such as the Entry/Exit System (EES) and, later on, ETIAS (planned for last quarter of 2026), will further strengthen border controls. These tools allow authorities to better track entries and exits and quickly identify overstays or inconsistencies. Even short trips now leave little room for error given more transparency will be given on the amount of days allowed in the Schengen area.
Who is most affected?
Stricter controls mainly impact:
-
non-EU/EFTA nationals,
-
frequent business travellers,
-
individuals with mixed or evolving immigration statuses,
-
employers relying on short-term or cross-border assignments.
Key takeaways
- ✔️ Border controls in Switzerland are stricter in practice, even without major legal changes.
- ✔️ Schengen allows such measures, and Switzerland applies them more rigorously.
-
✔️ Higher controls by neighbouring countries have a direct impact on Swiss travel.
-
✔️ Clear documentation and proper preparation are essential.
